However, election is mentioned in the Bible. It has acquired a negative connotation through strict ideas in which some people are predestined to be good. In a double election, some are predestined to salvation, others to damnation. No one has the opportunity to escape this fate because God is more powerful than man. We have arrived at double predestination.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”106445″]The idea that God predestines people to something seems at first glance to sound similar to the talk of election, as Paul does in Ephesians. However, there could be an important difference. When people talk about predestination, these considerations usually arise from a certain theological environment. However, Paul was not familiar with the Christian culture of later centuries. He was in the process of shaping the first version of a Christian culture. How he did this, what ideas he used to shape it, is the question here. If we compare Paul and his letters with later ideas, we can easily identify significant differences.

The importance of human action
As far as I can tell, the talk about predestination comes from two directions:

Evangelical: The prevailing assumption here is that people decide where they spend eternity. If a person believes, they will be saved and go to heaven. If he does not believe, he will not be saved and will end up in hell. Predestination can be recognized against this background, but this can often only be seen in retrospect. If you believe, you realize by looking in the rear-view mirror that you belong, that you were “predestined”. This is roughly how Romans 8:28-30 is explained.

Calvinist: Here, too, man is central, but the assumption is that man can contribute nothing. Human incapacity makes rescue impossible. Man is now dependent on a God who demands justice more than He can spread love. An unpredictable and often vengeful God mercilessly demands what man cannot deliver. Although the message of Jesus Christ provides a possibility of salvation, whether it is granted is down to the whim of an arbitrarily ruling God. Uncertainty reigns here.

The meaning of divine action
Paul is in a different category to the two ideas mentioned above. The apostle is not about people. It is about God and His Christ. God acts, He blesses us in Christ. What follows is merely an example of this reality.

Both of the first two views place people at the center, because people can either contribute everything or nothing. However, this is quite different from what Paul describes. The difference between talk of predestination on the one hand and election as outlined by Paul lies in the basis of the assumptions. In a good news message, it is not man and his ability or inability that is central, but God and His ability. The gospel of grace speaks about what God does, not about what is required of man. Paul has a different basis than many later attempts at explanation.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”387886″]

Election in Christ

In Ephesians, Paul begins to speak about how God blesses us in Christ (Eph 1:3) and then adds:

“Just as He chose us in Him before the casting down of the world, that we should be holy and without blemish in His sight.”
Eph 1:4

In this verse, election is mentioned. However, this is not the topic of this section. It’s not about us, it’s not about a doctrine of election or other such things. We are not at the center of the statement. Verse 4 is simply an explanation of verse 3. It is about how God blesses us in Christ. Verse 4 is an example of this and nothing more.

God blesses us in Christ, “just as He chose us in Him before the casting down of the world”. Paul describes here the way in which God blesses us in Christ. This is evident, among other things, according to Paul, from the fact that “He chose us in Him before the casting down of the world “. As in verse 3, the emphasis is on what God does in Christ. That is the good news for us. The good news is that God has “chosen us in Him”. God chooses us in Christ, and not we choose ourselves (note: the focus is on God’s actions).

God does not choose us as a goal in Himself, but wants to empower us in the here and now: “so that we may be holy and blameless before His face”. Paul is not talking about salvation from a hell or salvation for a heaven, or that something takes place in an afterlife. We have been and are blessed by God in Christ, and this should be visible in this life by being holy and spotless before His face.

To top it all off, it must also be emphasized here that this holiness and immaculateness is not an effort on our part, but that God chooses us in Christ so that we are. The fact that we can live as saints and blameless before God is not an indication of merit, not a mandate for a super-pious lifestyle, but an indirect emphasis of God’s blessing in Christ. This should lead, at least as a concept, to us being holy and blameless before His face. As long as God sees us in Christ, this is of course the case. However, this remains the case because God has already chosen us in Christ when we did not exist and could do neither good nor wrong. Our involvement is therefore not relevant. It is precisely God’s blessing, with which Paul began in the previous verse, that remains because it is not dependent on us.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”204962″]

Before the fall of the world

There is this translation “prostration of the world”. However, it is often translated as “foundation of the world”. Niederwurf (Greek katabole) is the etymologically based translation from the Greek. The word Grundlegung is an interpretative translation. How the Greek word is to be interpreted can be understood in different ways. Some link it to the foundation and thus the creation of the world. Others interpret this as a moral decline and a reference to the entry of sin into this world (with a reference to Rev 13:8).

There is something to be said for both interpretations. However, there is no coherent explanation of this term in the Bible. Nowhere is there a section that explains the term in a broader context. Rather, one could point out that the term is used slightly differently in different contexts (cf. for example Heb 4:3-4 with Heb 11:11). Incidentally, this is true for most biblical terms. Only rarely do we find such a detailed description of something in one chapter, as Paul wrote coherently about the resurrection and the making alive (1 Corinthians 15).

I take the view here that a better definition of this word is interesting, but not decisive for understanding Paul’s statements. Under no circumstances, however, can a doctrine about this term be derived from a subordinate clause and example. Paul teaches nothing here about a casting down or foundation of the world. However, it is clear that he uses the word. In context: He talks about the way God blesses us in Christ and makes it clear that we (can) have nothing to do with it ourselves. Paul refers to God and His work. Everything else should take a back seat.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”958803″]

Election

Election is often linked to a person’s final destination. Not so with Paul, but in many theological views. Election is often outlined as involving an ultimate goal that we are destined to reach through election. Election then appears to be something like the assurance of victory. The problem with such statements has already been mentioned above: They are statements in which the person and their experience are central. It is anthropocentric thinking. Although this is in line with man’s religious instinct, it has nothing to do with the good news that Paul is talking about here. People are not at the center. If this world is “God’s world”, if He really is “God” and deserves the designation, then it is about Himself. We are not central because He is central. Paul consistently points this out. Paul’s theology is not anthropocentric, but Christocentric and therefore theocentric.

In the Bible, election is not a goal in itself, but a means to an end. Those who are chosen become a channel for God’s actions. The chosen ones were not chosen because of good behavior or special piety, but they were and are chosen so that they can represent and tell something. Selected people do this for the respective target group.

Read more about what election means in the following article:[/vc_column_text][vc_button button_color=”accent” radius=”btn-round”
