Gossip about others is not in my interest. But if it’s for me, then I’m happy to listen. A secret is exciting. It concerns something I didn’t know until now. Perhaps it speaks of good things?[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”109360″]In the New Testament we read several times about secrets that are made known. As soon as they are mentioned, they are of course no longer secrets. Until then, however, they were. We read about this especially in the Apostle Paul. Paul, for example, writes of “his gospel”, which was unknown in past ages (Rom 16:27). This allows us to understand that some of what Paul writes was even difficult for the other apostles to understand (2Pet 3,15-16). Paul himself writes that he received his gospel directly through the revelation of Jesus Christ (Gal 1:11-12). Paul made secrets known. That shouldn’t surprise us.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”123398″]

No secrecy

Just as the Bible gradually evolves over many centuries from individual books and letters, some ideas are first hinted at and only later differentiated. The Protoevangelium in Gen 3,15, for example, is seen as such an approach.

Other things, however, were unknown. Only when unknown things are made known can they be recognized. These are the mysteries that Paul talks about. Nobody knew about it. When they are made public, it is something new. Paul reveals several secrets. Here, in this series on Ephesians, we will hear several times about such mysteries.

When Paul speaks of mysteries, he is not being secretive. It’s not about things you can’t know, but about things that are just being made public. The apostle hides nothing, does not become vague in his statements, nor does he appear mystical in his assumptions, but rather makes something known. This is sober and grand in equal measure. When Paul speaks of mysteries, they are no longer mysteries. The secrets have been revealed.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”213383″]

Several secrets

Paul speaks about several mysteries. He speaks of things that were unknown until his proclamation. In Ephesians alone, Paul mentions the term “mystery” several times. We now come to the first occurrence:

“In all wisdom and prudence He (God) makes known to us the mystery of His will.”
Eph 1:9

This is the first secret. The apostle mentions this in a subordinate clause, which should further explain what was predicted:

“According to the riches of His grace, which He causes to overflow in us (In all wisdom and prudence He makes known to us the mystery of His will …).”
Eph 1:8-9

When Paul speaks about the mystery of God’s will, it is an example of the overflowing riches of His grace that He shows to believers. The core of the statement lies in this grace that applies to us. It is only explained by the following example. So how do we experience the riches of God’s grace? we could ask. Paul describes the answer to this with the words “in all wisdom and prudence He makes known to us the mystery of His will”. How do we recognize the riches of God’s grace? Well, for example, by allowing us to recognize what God has in mind. These words contain an intimacy with God’s nature and work.

When you hear “God’s will”, many people think of themselves first. They ask themselves what God wants them to do in order to be pleasing to God. This is a good recipe for legal thinking and religious action (cf. Col 2:23). However, when Paul speaks of God’s will, it is not about us, but about Him. That is a huge difference. God’s will is about what He wants, what goal He is striving for, what He has in mind. When we read these verses, there is nothing about man. It’s about God’s plans. It is about the goal that God has in mind. Paul lets us share in this here.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”723973″]

The secret of His will

Paul describes the mystery of God’s will as follows:

“In all wisdom and prudence He makes known to us the mystery of His will,
according to His good pleasure
that He presented Himself in Him
for a management of the completion of the deadlines,
in order to raise the universe in Christ:
both the one in the heavens and the one on earth.”
Eph 1:8-10

What was secret until now? That God has in mind to raise all things in Christ. The Greek word used here (Greek anakephalaio) is otherwise only found in Romans 13:9, where it says “For the commandment, ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not covet,’ or any other commandment, culminates in this word, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself'”. (Rom 13:9).

If one could translate “to bring all things together under one head in the Christ”, this does not mean “to make submissive by force”, as hell-lovers like to interpret it. It is not about people, any more than it is about faith in Jesus or anything similar. Only God’s will is made known here. It is about His goal. What goal does God have in mind? To summarize everything in Christ, or to bring everything under Christ or into Christ. This is God’s will and not a powerless wish (cf. Eph 1:11).

When Paul wrote in Ephesians 1:3 that we are blessed in Christ, he was addressing the church, i.e. “all the saints who are also believers in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 1:1). Hell-lovers like to see believers as a special group for eternity, separated from today’s unbelievers. That’s the whole concept of hell: make and keep separation. Here, however, we read of God’s will, that He has much better things in mind. The secret of His will is to lead everything to Christ.

In the letter to the Romans, the word “to head up” is translated as “to culminate”, because it is not about exercising power, but about a goal to which something leads. All intermediate steps are omitted. It’s like standing at a bus stop and reading on the board what the final destination of the journey is. This board is not a travel description, it does not talk about how many stops there are. You only read about the final destination. This is demonstrated to us here.

What God wants, He does. That is why he is God. What does He want to achieve? God wants to summarize everything in Christ. That is the goal. He achieves this, not because man is so super-pious and compliant, but because He is God. It is His will. This is also confirmed by several other biblical passages. The apostle even speaks of this in the same chapter:

“(Christ, …) exalted above every principality and authority, power and dominion, even above every name that is named not only in this eon but also in the one to come. He (God the Christ) subordinates everything to Him, at His feet; and He gives Him as head over everything to the called-out church, which is His body, the completion of Him who completes the universe in everything.”
Eph 1:20-23

Every subordination has a goal. The municipality has a task to fulfill. As a corporate body, we are the completion of Christ, who completes the universe in everything. Paul does not describe this as a pious wish from God, which man still has to agree to, but as God’s declared will, which He will also carry out (Eph 1:11).[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”168293″]

An extraordinary view

This passage in Ephesians is full of confidence, full of clarity. God has a great goal in mind. He has made this known to us. It was the secret of His will. But we can already recognize this today. This corresponds to the richness of His grace that applies to us today. We are given a glimpse of God’s goal. This is not just grace for us, as everyone likes to assume, but also a prospect of an effect for all other people. This richness of grace that applies to us today does not end with us. God himself has something bigger in mind. This was a secret, but Paul makes it known here.

What overflows is more than enough. There is so much overflowing grace that not only is our cup filled in a figurative language, but this cup overflows. Grace is greater and more than we ourselves need. The abundance is so great that one day all things will be summed up in Christ, until Christ also subordinates himself to God, so that God can become all in all (1 Corinthians 15:25-28).

Paul reveals a mystery and shows that God’s goal is not exclusive to the church today, but will encompass the whole universe.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”112068″]

When will this take place?

Paul also assigns this goal of God, which he talks about, to a time. Paul writes that God has chosen a goal in Christ “for the administration of the fullness of time” (Eph 1:10). Then, in Christ, he will raise up the universe. What Paul makes known has to do with a special time at the end of all time.

In the third chapter of Ephesians, Paul refers to this mystery once again when he writes:

“Therefore I, Paul, am the bondservant of Christ Jesus for you who are of the Gentiles – for if you have heard of the administration of God’s grace which has been given to me for you, since by a revelation the mystery was made known to me (as I wrote just before in brief).”
Eph 3:1-3

Paul does not see an immediate fulfillment of all desires. Grace is precisely something that comes into play when wishes are not immediately fulfilled or even seem unattainable. If we read carefully with Paul in the first chapter of Ephesians, we easily recognize that every blessing, every action of God is localized as “in Christ”. This is not in us, but in Him.

Logically, we do not feel or see this blessing. It is not about a visible and immediate solution to all wishes and things, but about a spiritual outlook. If we want to “believe like Paul”, then we have to come to terms with the fact that, like Paul, we do not see everything fulfilled immediately. Some things are hidden in the future. Trust in God and confidence in His statements direct the heart towards God’s work instead of one’s own wishes and religious behavior.

We are blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ (Eph 1:3). That is real. In this reality, we also experience the richness of God’s grace and gain insight and perspective on God’s ultimate purpose. This is also spiritual and therefore not tangible, but no less real. If you have an outlook, you can look at your life from this perspective.

Believers therefore live today, in this world, with a sober faith, a trust in God and by grace. At the same time, we are given an outlook that gives direction to our lives, thoughts and thanksgiving. This is particularly valuable. Pious phrases do not help. Perhaps as a member of a church or free church we are looking forward to this prospect. Perhaps we are outside religious communities and do not speak the “language of Canaan”. That doesn’t matter. The wealth is there. It is for you and me. Who will be against us? (Rom 8:31).[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”911464″]

Wisdom and prudence

There are some words in these verses that we haven’t looked at yet. This applies, for example, to the following expression: “In all wisdom and prudence” God makes the mystery of His will known to us. Wisdom paired with prudence. This is the attitude with which God makes the mystery known to us. There is an intention behind it. It is something that requires wisdom and is told with prudence. In what way?

At first it seems logical in a larger context, from which wisdom always operates, but it seems sensible from pragmatic considerations, which prudence advocates. God Himself allows us to participate in His goal and this larger context. Grace does not stop with us, but urges us to fulfill this great context. Prudence considers this proclamation necessary for grace to be effective in our lives. It’s not all about us and our faith. God has bigger plans. This can and should fertilize our lives.

Faith can give direction to our understanding: What God has in mind makes sense. Become wide in your heart.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

    0

    0

[551,606
667,554,670,1583,599
post-53628","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-allaussoehnung-en","category-bible-books","tag-all-reconciliation","tag-allaussoehnung-en","tag-church","tag-mystery","tag-pauline-epistles

Paul reveals a secret • Sein Ansatz: Weg vom religiösen Leistungsdenken, hin zur paulinischen Botschaft der Gnade.
