One of the arguments is that although God is love, he must also be just. With such a statement, the doctrine of hell promotes an ambivalent image of God that has nothing at all to do with the Bible, God’s love and God’s justice. The idea is used to emphasize the “necessity of God’s justice” and to derive the “necessity of hell” from it.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”206454″]This idea is omnipresent in evangelical justifications of hell. One regrets that hell exists, but God is just. “God is love, but He is also just.” Have you ever heard that? Here, God’s love is played off against His justice.

This is how it usually works in the concept of hell: God loves man, but only as long as he lives. If he dies, this person has either “done everything right”, namely believed in Jesus, or he ends up in hell, where he will be tormented for eternity. The last thing, it is believed, is the demand of God’s justice. There are many problems with this idea. Let’s explore some of these thoughts.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”147300″]

These teachings are missing in the Bible

If you mention things like “God is love, but He is also just”, you stumble across several ideas that are unknown to the Bible.

Nowhere do we find such a teaching in the Bible
The first thing to note is that while this is a common expression in certain communities, there is nothing in the Bible to support it. If you want to base this on Scripture, you have to extract various texts from their own contexts in order to construct this doctrine from them. This is a sure sign that something is wrong.

The doctrine is usually based on a circular argument
This is how it works: First you have the doctrine that is declared to be “biblical”. Consequently, this is the assumption with which one reads the Bible and then says: “See, that’s what it says. The circular argument is: it is so, therefore it is so.

Decision theory
Another point that is not mentioned directly, but resonates everywhere, is the doctrine of decision-making. This says that you have to decide for Jesus, otherwise God is powerless and cannot save you. You have to make a decision in this life, otherwise you will end up in hell. There is no such teaching in the Bible, even if biblical passages are interpreted anecdotally in this sense (e.g. Acts 16:30). However, neither Jesus nor the apostolic letters contain anything remotely resembling a “doctrine of decision” in the sense of the doctrine of hell.

Justice
The idea that hell brings forth God’s justice is in direct contradiction with the Bible and a distortion of the gospel.

The expiry date of God’s love
The doctrine of hell says that God’s love ends when you die and that God’s justice is mercilessly applied afterwards. The God of grace then becomes merciless. Anyone who seriously considers this is getting into hot water. God is love by nature, but this love has an expiry date. That would be the day you die. Assessment: These are inferences upon inferences and there is no one in the Bible who teaches this.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”160148″]

The need for justice

On this point, I have to agree with the fan club from hell: Justice is an important theme in the Bible. Everything revolves around justice. The “justice of God” is something like the highest form of justice. These should not simply be ignored. But the question is whether it will be achieved through hell, as the fan club says.

If hell is there to bring about justice, then the idea fails miserably. The doctrine of hell speaks of an endless hell and eternal torment. It is precisely this aspect of endlessness that proves that justice is never achieved. If it were achieved, hell would be superfluous. If hell is nevertheless maintained, injustice remains because the demand for justice is never fulfilled.

The justice of God, if taken seriously, is the quickest proof that there can be no hell. A traditional hell does not achieve justice, much less God’s justice, because it should burn eternally and people would have to stay in it forever. In other words, you never reach your destination. The traditional hell virtually emphasizes an injustice of God, because no human being is or can be just (Romans 3:10), but is nevertheless held responsible for it. It seems monstrous that a God of love would throw people into hell for eternity in order to fulfill his “justice”.

One should be aware of the contradictions of the doctrine of hell.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”361175″]

The accusation of all-reconciliation

The idea of hell is something of a touchstone of orthodoxy for some communities. This is especially true when you realize that hell is not mentioned in the Bible. I have often experienced how reference is then immediately made to the doctrine of all-reconciliation, with the insinuation that “God’s justice is simply ignored there”. The doctrine of universal reconciliation and the doctrine of hell are two ideas about the outcome of world history and God’s actions in it.

The doctrine of hell sees an estimated 95% of humanity as “lost”, and they will therefore and “because of God’s justice” burn in hell for eternity. An all-reconciliation, on the other hand, refers to Colossians 1:20 and other biblical passages in which a positive outcome of the same world history and of God’s actions is recognized. The fan club of hell now accuses the doctrine of all-reconciliation, forgetting the justice of God and not taking judgment seriously.

However, this assessment of an all-reconciliation and the accusations testify to an abysmal negligence and ignorance of biblical statements. It is easy to show that hell does not exist in the Bible. There is not a single word in Hebrew or Greek that is associated with all that the doctrine of hell summarizes as an idea. If the word hell still appears in a Bible translation, it is clear from a comparison of several translations that the translation with “hell” is sometimes used here, sometimes there. The translation is not consistent. Nor can it be, because you have to interpret the idea of hell into the Bible before you can read it out.

However, it seems even more important that the demand for justice has already been fulfilled in the gospel and not through “my faith or yours”. Justice is the basis for an all-reconciliation, even if it is abused by the doctrine of hell.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”361175″]

The justice of God

Paul writes:

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, … for in it God’s righteousness is revealed.”
Rom 1:16-17

The point is this: the justice that should be carried out by the fan club of hell in hell already exists in the Gospel. As Paul writes here to the believers in Rome, God’s righteousness isrevealed in the gospel. In other words, God’s righteousness is already there and the gospel speaks of it. That is why the gospel is a good news message and not a threatening message.

We now make an inauthentic link and say that this righteousness is achieved “only through faith”. This demand for faith stems from the doctrine of decision and has nothing to do with this text. If you would like to understand this, you will find a detailed study of the letter to the Romans on this website.[/vc_column_text][vc_button button_color=”accent” radius=”btn-round” border_animation=”btn-ripple-in” border_width=”0″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fkernbeisser.ch%2Fen%2Fbible-books%2Fletter-to-the-romans%2F|title:Letter%20to%20the%20Romans|target:_blank|” button_color_type=”uncode-palette” uncode_shortcode_id=”167696″]Letter to the Romans[/vc_button][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”361175″]Back to the justice of God. This, writes Paul, is revealed in the Gospel. As the “righteousness of God”, it is not a “demand of God” that people have to fulfill, but it is about God’s own righteousness that He has achieved. Therefore, it is God’s righteousness. This is testified to and revealed in the gospel (Romans 1:16-17).

The third chapter of Romans then says:

“But now, apart from the law, God’s righteousness has been revealed (witnessed by the law and the prophets), a righteousness of God through the faith of Jesus Christ.”
Rom 3:21-22

Note that this righteousness of God did not come about through my faith or yours, but (literally) through the faith of Jesus Christ. In Greek there is a genitive here. This is now interpreted as follows: Jesus Christ ‘s faith led him to the cross. God’s righteousness was established there. Compare Romans 3:24-26, in which Paul clarifies this once again.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”389092″]

Where the righteousness of God shines

What happened on the cross and was confirmed by Jesus’ resurrection is the basis for universal reconciliation. The doctrine of hell, on the other hand, does not recognize God’s justice. It denies the cross by demanding an additional justice, if necessary through the violence of hell. Hell is a really strange construct.

It is precisely this righteousness of God that forms the basis for an all-reconciliation. That is why we read in the letter to the Romans:

“Accordingly, as by the one grievance there came to condemnation for all men, so also by the one judgment there comes to justification of life for all men.”
Rom 5:18

In Colossians, Paul speaks explicitly of the reconciliation of the universe. In this context, he speaks explicitly about the blood of the cross, through which this all-reconciliation is achieved:

“Since all perfection has its pleasure in dwelling in Him and reconciling the universe to Himself through Him (by making peace through the blood of His cross), through Him, be it that on earth or that in the heavens.”
Col 1:19-20

The justice of God does not shine in hell, but on the cross. The doctrine of universal reconciliation refers to this. According to the doctrine of hell, there is an expiry date on God’s love and then a merciless God who holds people down in injustice for eternity. All-reconciliation, on the other hand, points to direct biblical connections and proceeds from the cross to bring about salvation for the whole world. Note that Paul is not talking about human effort. It is God who makes peace through the blood of his (Jesus’) cross and thus reconciles the whole universe with himself.

The contrast could not be greater.[/vc_column_text][vc_button button_color=”accent” radius=”btn-round” border_animation=”btn-ripple-in” border_width=”0″ link=”url:https%3A%2F%2Fkernbeisser.ch%2Fen%2Fjustice-and-judgment%2F|target:_blank|” button_color_type=”uncode-palette” uncode_shortcode_id=”154738″]Justice and judgment[/vc_button][vc_empty_space empty_h=”3″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

    0

    0

[565,632

post-55465","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-biblical-terms","category-judgement

God is love, but also just?
