What do I stumble across during an examination?[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”159328″]

The word hell

Where do you find the word “hell”? Only in some and not in all translations. The closer a translation wants to stay to the basic text, the quicker the translation “hell” disappears from that translation.

However, one should also bear in mind that Jesus and the apostles did not speak modern German, English or Dutch, and that there is no word for hell in the original language of the New Testament. In many people’s understanding, the word “hell” stands for a range of interpretations, for a certain idea. However, this is less clear when we compare the respective translation with the basic Greek text of the New Testament.

A comparison shows that the word “hell” has no clear equivalent in the basic Greek text. The ideas that we associate with hell today do not originate from the time of the New Testament. Where hell is still mentioned in some translations, there are different words in the basic text. One time the Greek word “Hades” is translated as hell, another time this applies to “Gehenna” or “Tartaroo”. It is quite chaotic, inconsistent and incoherent. If different words are all translated as “hell”, it seems strange because the original different words were used very differently in the New Testament. Those who translate with “hell” do so on the basis of certain theological traditions, not on the basis of the basic text.

Not a single word in the basic text can be consistently translated as “hell”. There is no word in the basic text that agrees with this hell tradition. The Bible knows no word for “hell” in the basic text. Only some translations therefore speak of a hell. The differences must be conspicuous and make us wonder.

It gets even stranger when you compare different Bible translations with each other. The closer a Bible translation wants to stick to the basic text, the faster the concept of “hell” disappears from Scripture. One reads less or not at all about hell, but rather refers directly to the basic text. Instead of “hell”, a direct reference to the basic text often appears. Here are some examples from German translations:

Revelation 20:14, in the context of the last judgment before the great white throne
Elberfelder writes Hades (this word is in the basic text)
Luther 2017 writes: Hell (why?)
Schlachter 2000 writes: Kingdom of the dead (based on Greek ideas?).

Luke 16:23, in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus
Elberfelder writes: Hades (this word is in the basic text)
Luther 2017 writes: Hell (why?)
Schlachter 2000 writes: Kingdom of the dead (based on Greek ideas?).

The point is this: Who determines the translation and why this different choice of words? If you read “Hades”, “Gehenna” or “cast into Tartarus” in the basic text, then these are not the same things in the Bible. They are different, which is why they are called by different words. Why should they be thrown together and translated uniformly? The same Greek words are not always translated with the same German words. The translation is selective. That is arbitrary. Example:

Acts 2:27 (the Greek word “Hades”)
Elberfelder writes: Hades
Luther 2017 writes: Kingdom of death
Schlachter 2000 writes: Kingdom of death

Luk 10:15 (the Greek word “Hades”)
Elberfelder writes: Hades
Luther 2017 writes: Hell
Schlachter 2000 writes: Realm of the dead.

Luther’s translation thus writes “kingdom of death” and “hell” for the same word “Hades”. Why is that? It becomes clear that the translations do not agree. No hell can be explained on the basis of one translation. On the basis of the basic text, there is no word that corresponds to the traditional hell. It also becomes interesting when you look at the three original terms in isolation and examine all the biblical passages in which they are mentioned. None of these terms show the image of the hell tradition of many Christian communities. That should make you sit up and take notice.

If I, as a Christian, believe that my beliefs should be based on the Bible, I cannot simply shake off these findings without questioning my Christianity. You may discover that you are starting from tradition rather than the Bible. This discovery can be like an earthquake for your own beliefs. Respect if you dare to deal with it![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ back_color=”color-731465″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ content_parallax=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”153910″ back_color_type=”uncode-palette”][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”980999″]

Who teaches a hell?

We do not find the idea of hell in the Old Testament. There is no mention of hell there, even if one or two references appear in a few Bible translations. If you look at the most popular biblical passages for hell-lovers, you end up in the Gospels. Jesus is said to have introduced hell. Nobody talks about it before him. Nobody talks about it after him. The apostles don’t talk about hell either, and certainly not about the ideas of hell held by today’s believers.

However, Jesus is not talking about a medieval hell either. The Middle Ages came much later. Jesus spoke of Gehenna and explicitly referred to a certain context that was influenced by Isaiah (Luke 9:43-48; Isaiah 66:24). Isaiah, however, did not teach a hell.

To summarize:

Before Jesus, no one spoke of hell.

Jesus did not speak of hell, but of Gehenna.

After Jesus, no one spoke of hell.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”195675″]

The hell of tradition

No one in the Bible speaks of hell. Hell as an idea and place of God’s punishment and justice emerges much later. It is then linked to biblical texts as a collection of ideas, although the texts themselves speak of something else. Hell is thus projected onto the Bible and those who are used to it read it out again. There is no justification for a hell in the Bible, but habit and tradition always mention the same texts until people believe that a hell is taught there.

So hell is maintained today through circular reasoning: First, the idea of hell is projected onto the Bible in order to then point to the predefined explanations and say, “look, it’s there!”. But no, it’s not there if you interpret these texts in their own context. That is the problem.

The hell of tradition is also justified by many supporting ideas. There is the idea that God’s justice virtually demands hell, because otherwise justice will never be achieved. Critically, God’s justice is by definition not achieved in an “eternal” hell. The eternity of hell makes it impossible to achieve God’s justice. Hell is therefore never a solution for the justice of God. Hell-lovers apparently do not know the righteousness of God, which He has already achieved on the cross. It is called “God’s righteousness”, which is proclaimed in the Good News (Rom 1:16-17; Rom 3:21 ff). The hell of tradition is the corruption of God’s grace.

The hell of tradition is part of a larger house of cards of assumptions that cannot be found in the Bible, but must necessarily be located there. Think, for example, of ideas such as the “absolute free will of man” and “must believe in order to be saved”. These ideas are conclusions from tradition, nothing more. They are not biblical principles, still less connections explained in the Bible. They are fanciful formulations from the traditions that many grow up with.

Anyone who wants to overcome hell and wants to question the Bible itself can do so. But what is being questioned is not only the idea of hell itself, but also related doctrines, such as the absolute free will of man, which the Bible says nothing about. This is why a house of cards can collapse, and not just a single card is replaced.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”107744″]

The hell of the self-righteous

Uncomfortable but often understandable: Hell-lovers not infrequently appear arrogant, self-righteous and judgmental. The hell-lovers themselves never go to hell, of course, but are convinced that others who see it differently cannot be believers at all. Belief in hell becomes a measure of orthodoxy, a mechanism of demarcation and a criterion for exclusion.

It may sound absurd, but anyone who has doubts about hell on the basis of God’s grace can be given an ultimatum by their own community. You must either give in on this point of doctrine or leave the community. Belief in hell becomes a sign of “correct doctrine” here. There appears what characterizes the community’s attitude of faith: Arrogance, self-righteousness and condemnation of others. It is not compatible with the grace of God in Christ Jesus.

If hell is not a sign of orthodoxy because it has no place in the Bible, why not rejoice in this new insight and perspective? Wouldn’t that be much more in keeping with grace?

The self-righteous resist grace because grace knows no self-merit. The self-righteous rely on their own achievements and demand the same from others. Grace must remain outside the door. But that is religion, not faith. Those who believe rejoice in the righteousness that God has established and say with Paul:

“But all things from God, who reconciled us to himself through Jesus Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation.”
2 Corinthians 5:18-19

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”193029″]

No hell

The Bible knows no hell. Those who insist on a hell insist on a tradition and close themselves off from the testimony of the Bible. Self-righteous preachers of hell may seduce, but they cannot convince people in the long run. Grace speaks differently. Good news or threatening news is the difference here.
