As a church, you can think of yourself as a people’s church, but that tends to point to the past. In most places today, the church is no longer the center of society. People are leaving the churches and free churches and have thus either left the known faith communities and put faith aside or are outside religious institutions with their beliefs. Is faith still relevant today? For whom and why (not)?[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”210670″]In my first post, I pointed out that people can believe. This ability does not indicate an institutional affiliation, nor does it have anything to do with dogmatic ideas. I described it as a human ability that plays an important role in our lives. Only when people can believe can we begin to talk about the content of this belief. To believe is to trust. In the original languages of the Bible, “believe” and “trust” mean the same thing. Unlike in German, there are no separate words for them.

What or who I trust is then the next step. We trust in small or big steps. Do you have a partner? Then trust is a tried and tested reality. Are you employed? Then you probably trust that you will soon be allowed to work again. It would be pointless to question this trust. It would make life much more complicated. Belief simplifies perception by making trust the basis for everyday assumptions. It’s the same with beliefs that everyone makes.

This approach is generally applicable. However, if one has reduced religious beliefs to a specific set of tenets, this broad assumption may seem far-fetched. If, for example, one believes that supposedly “correct” faith must look only a certain way, this inevitably leads to missteps. For example, if one assumes—based on something written somewhere in the Bible—that one must believe in Jesus in order to avoid ending up in hell, that is an almost reckless narrowing of the concept. Not only is the statement false when compared to the Bible, but everyday applications and the meaning of the term “believe” have been misinterpreted. This serves no one. I am not questioning the Bible here, but I arrive at these conclusions because I am trying to take the Bible seriously.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row row_height_percent=”0″ back_color=”color-731465″ overlay_alpha=”50″ gutter_size=”3″ column_width_percent=”100″ shift_y=”0″ z_index=”0″ content_parallax=”0″ uncode_shortcode_id=”121357″ back_color_type=”uncode-palette”][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”107607″]

Function and content

The narrowing of the term “believe” (a verb) usually lies in the fact that people confuse the ability to believe with the content or a known subculture. People like to argue about the content of faith. This is perfect if you want to emphasize your own self-righteousness. People entrench themselves in trench warfare and limit themselves to arguments with which they can prove their own superiority, while the other person naturally has no idea of reality. These are unfruitful arguments because the focus on content only serves to set boundaries.

The approach that all people can believe first liberates the content. This does not mean that there is no truth. It merely gives the understanding a context. Of course, a belief content is formed, but this differs according to ability. What you believe is learned and can also be relearned. Sometimes this is necessary, for example when you say goodbye to sectarian ideas.

Any understanding we have is by definition human and therefore limited. It cannot be absolute. This neither denies nor doubts an absolute truth, but understands one’s own understanding as limited. Such an attitude frees us from self-righteousness and opens the horizon for a conversation in which people can discover their ability to believe together. Then, of course, it can and should become personal.

Paul describes the content and the ability to believe as follows:

“If you confess Jesus as Lord with your mouth and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, ‘Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame’.”
Rom 10:9-11

Discuss:

Should this now be described as Christian?

What should be confessed in terms of content?

What does “believe” mean in these verses? What does “confess” mean? What is explained here and what is not?

There is talk of salvation. From what? For what? Describe in the words of this passage. Does it succeed?

What is the function of the heart and mouth? Is it about preconditions or something else?

The quote probably comes from Isaiah 28:16. Did it mean what evangelicals think today?

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”109787″]

Lasting things

In the 13th chapter of First Corinthians, the famous chapter on love, Paul writes

“But from now on faith, expectation and love remain, these three. But the greatest of these is love; therefore pursue love.”
1Cor 13:13

I would like to emphasize the word “remain” here. Faith remains, just like expectation and love. So anyone who thinks that faith is no longer relevant today will encounter a different insight here.

Paul is not concerned here with the relevance of faith, but mentions that faith remains. He is not defending faith, but mentions in these chapters that some things pass, but other things remain. To abide or not to abide, that is the question here.

The context for the letter to the Corinthians is their situation. It was a chaotic church that attracted negative attention due to sectarianism, incest and a false emphasis on spiritual gifts. Paul tries to create order in this situation. Some things are more important than others.

Love, for example, will never cease. Prophetic words, on the other hand, will cease, tongues will cease and words of knowledge will cease (1 Corinthians 13:8). That is why love is permanent. But why are faith and expectation marked as permanent?

Once again, it is about the context. In the context of the church and Corinth, it should be made clear that the spiritual gifts are dismissed. Other things, however, remain. This is the contrast that Paul is making clear here. Faith, expectation and love stand in contrast to the special effects. The special effects may have a purpose at that time, but it is temporary. Other things are permanent.

When Paul writes: “From now on …”, he is talking about his time. From the moment he writes this, faith, expectation and love remain more important than the spectacular spiritual gifts. He corrects the focus away from spiritual gifts to the three things (faith, expectation and love). This marks the present time.

However, this focus is also limited in time.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”177813″]

What will disappear

Not only are the spiritual gifts not finally relevant, but other things will also disappear.

Spiritual gifts disappear (1Cor 13:8).

Immaturity (which is linked to spiritual gifts) is dismissed (1 Corinthians 13:10-11).

Faith is once replaced by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7; 1 Corinthians 13:12).

Expectation will be fulfilled (Rom 8:20-25).

Behind these statements is the expectation of a final fulfillment of all being, as Paul points out in the same 1 Corinthian letter that God will one day be all in all (1 Corinthians 15:28). When everything is fulfilled, there will no longer be any need for interim solutions.

Faith and expectation are interim solutions. They characterize the present day, but will one day become superfluous because their goal will be fulfilled.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”181683″]

Topicality of faith

The ability to believe remains relevant. It shapes our humanity, enables our trust in God and remains in this function until a fulfillment occurs. This is, of course, a statement of faith. I mention it because the naturalness of faith seems to be a given today. There is no contradiction between a living faith and the present day. On the contrary: faith remains relevant because it belongs to us as human beings in this world.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”211930″]

What we can leave behind

Even if the ability to believe remains relevant, we can leave behind interpretations that do not work. A certain interpretation of faith can turn out to be unhealthy, a subculture can be characterized by abuse. If we can leave these interpretations behind, we gain freedom of belief.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”981587″]

Relevance of faith

The relevance of faith lies not in a projection, not in a particular culture or doctrine, not in an institution or society, but in the possibility of reflecting on it. We can then use the function of faith to appropriate the content of faith. The proclamation serves this purpose. The gospel is the good news that then conveys content. You can respond to this content with your life and trust. This is what it means to “believe”.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text uncode_shortcode_id=”881104″]

Temporary

Faith is temporary. It ends where seeing begins. We believe today, but that is temporary. Of course, you can describe faith more broadly, for example as “faith is seeing with the heart”. That sounds nice, but it is not accurate, because the object of faith and trust is not mentioned. If I have faith in God, I want to include that. If I can nourish confidence through the Bible, I want to consciously include that. I also include this when I know that it concerns a temporary situation.

Faith is therefore more versatile than a simple definition. Faith cannot be confused with a particular culture of belief, still less with an understanding of doctrine or a conviction. Today, faith, expectation and love are among the enduring things. Love, however, is greater than faith and it also lasts longer.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space empty_h=”2″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

    0

    0

[592,759,635

post-60138","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-life-and-faith","category-rethinking-faith","category-who-is-god

Is faith relevant today?
