Women in the community

I have a few questions

Was Paul a misogynist? Did he teach that Christian community requires a patriarchy? Do women have to wear headgear? Do women have to submit to the men in the church? Such questions are explored on this topic page. Various aspects of this topic are addressed and critically assessed in several articles.

Here are some typical questions that are asked in this context:

  • Do women have to be subordinate to men?
  • Are women not allowed to teach in churches or be pastors?
  • Do women have to wear a head covering?

These questions were formulated carefully. They point to an area of tension that is very tangible in many a community. In some cases, a culture of faith has developed in which these issues have found an absolute answer and form of expression. This can be seen, for example, in the fact that women appear with head coverings or wear a veil when praying. Women are also barred from leading positions because this does not correspond to “the biblical order”, according to the reasoning. Not all points need to be applied in every community.

Now you can think what you like about it, but these things shape the everyday faith of many people. These are often requirements that must be met if you want to appear “serious” in the community. Sometimes critical questions are not tolerated.

Some will object: “It’s in the Bible, isn’t it?” It is precisely this comment that I would like to take seriously on this topic page. I would like to discuss the typical biblical passages in various articles. What you discover can be astonishing. Paul was not a misogynist, he did not introduce subordination or the headscarf and instead taught completely different things. How this fits together can be read directly in the Bible.

Interpreting the Bible

How you read the Bible is of course an important part of interpretation. Even if I go into this in the respective articles, the following article could provide some insightful help:

Is everything in the Bible to be understood literally?
